question for ATOT's sysadmins

I know that in smaller shops the lines are often blurred and title inflation abounds, but given a medium-sized enterprise / institution (dedicated datacenter / NOC with dozens to hundreds of servers), what would be the defining differences in job duties between a "System Administrator" and a "Sr. System Administrator"?

I know there are always semantic differences, but what do you see the defining skillset differences being?

a lot of jobs will use the "Sr" title when your the only one, or theres only two people and your the more experienced of the two. i had this happen to me at universities, in the publishing industry, all over the place. it was a ploy so they could make you do more cause your the only one on staff.

Sr. = more money, decision making abilities, tells sysadmin what do do, sets direction, strategic role over tactical, etc.

That's why I specifically framed the question within larger shops. I know more small-biz "Directors of Corporate IT" that don't understand basic networking than I care to count... 🙂

titles dont mean much

😕 they do twice a month when its payday.

Yup. They don't mean much across different companies but they definitely do within one company.

This has helped. I was examining two positions that basically seemed identical, at the same company, except one was Sr. I have a feeling it might be assessment / server deployment duties that separate the two more than, say, knowing Perl like the back of your hand. Someone mentioned "strategic over tactical"--I think that sums it up pretty well.
