how'd you chose your child's godparents?

I'm trying to figure out what I need to do to lock it in for whenever my sister has a kid :p

Same here

It was people that we were close to when the child was very young.

Didn't choose godparents because we're atheist. We did, however, choose someone to put in our wills to take care of the kids in case we both died. It was a pretty easy decision to make.

Not really, but I can see where people would use the same premises to choose.

Best man and Maid of Honor at wedding are my daughter's godparents. My sister (not maid of honor) took offense and didn't bother showing up to the christening.

We didn't either ... but as someone else stated their care is provided for in our will.

we don't do that
is it a Catholic thing? or more ethnic/cultural?

I'm not Catholic. But I'm pretty sure I have godparents though I have no idea who they are. I guess it must be ethnic/cultural, but I'm just your average white mutt.

it's definitely an anglican, catholic and jewish thing, but it's also used in non-religion ways for some people/cultures.
