Question for Apple heads...

Is it possible to use a "installation" disk that came with a different computer to update my OS X version? From Panther to Tiger? Will it cause any problems?

I've heard that it will, but I've never tried it. It's most likely against the EULA though.

It usually checks to see what system you are using. If the cd says iBook on it and you are trying to install it on an iMac, it won't work. I believe there is a work around though.

Its from an iBook to an iBook...if that helps. I know it breaks EULA..I want to test before I buy.

It might work. But, the cd usually contains drivers for that specific iBook. It may install wrong drivers and cause problems.

I may be wrong though. You can give it a shot to see if it even installs.

OSes shipped with a Mac control the Gestalt ID of the hardware before installing. You can compare the Gestalt IDs of your iBooks here. If they are the same, I think its highly unprobable that you are going to encounter any problems.

Well I tried and it says "Can not install on this machine" or something like that. I have seen so many success stories of cross porting that I thought at least i could go from one revision to another of the same line.

oh yea! no problems at all! we swap around the new tiger disk to upgrade all our apples all the time(well, not the same update disk all the time, everytime apple updates.. you ge the pic). saves us a ton of money. no worries about problems there buddy

He's talking about the OS specifically for certain Macs, not the retail version.

You may want to run a google search, I remember reading about a guy who wanted to run Tiger on some Mac that was not supported by Tiger. So, he installed Tiger on another computer, made an image of that hdd, and that put that hdd in the Mac that Tiger would not originally install on.
