how's gameplay supposed to work in this game?

I can't figure out how I'm supposed to wasd move + click on enemies to attack them + simultaneously click on abilities in the taskbar without stopping my attacks on the enemies.

DDO is more like a FPS from the control side. Enable mouse-look, point your view at the enemy, and left-click to do a basic attack at the enemy. Press the number of your attack on the keyboard to fire off the specific skill.

You can easily hit 15 skills or so from the keyboard (1-5,alt1-5,ctrl1-5) which is more than enough to cover the combat abilities of any class. All your non-combat abilities can be put on the other slots and clicked with your mouse when you need them (search, clicky items, buffs, etc).

I really like the control system and once you get used to switching in and out of mouse-look I think you will too.

What JoshGuru7 said.

First, you start with 1 hotbar. Click on the tiny icon to split a second, third, and fourth hotbar. That'll get you through the first few levels. You can reposition these anywhere on screen (and adjust to make them vertical or horizontal). Then drag skills, spells, action feats, equipment "clickies", potions, wands into the hotbars.

I also used the "key mapping" options to assign letter keys to certain hotbar spaces.

Once you get used to it, it becomes second nature. DDO has a huge variety of stuff that your character can use/activate. Just figure out what works for you and build up from there.
