Do they 'clink/clunk' more readily and slightly louder than IDE hard drives? I figure the internal workings can't be that much different, but i'm kinda paranoid that something is wrong with mine, as I can feel each 'clink/clunk' each time it accesses something vibrating through my desk... Given it's a cheap-shod desk, but still...?

Anybody? And no, it's not the clanging or knocking of a dying/dead HD, and there aren't any performance issues...

only recently have the drives become native sata as befor they were regular ata with a ata->sata bridge on them, but they are still the same drive mechanics with different connectors and possibly a couple new features, like ncq.

this could be normal as the loudest hdd i had was a seagate 9GB 7200 ata100 hdd, even. it sounded like a grinder and i could feel the vibration through my desk. the drive has lasted me for, well a long time. i can't remember when 9GB hdds were large, but at least 5yrs and it is still running today.

Not that I have noticed. I always figure if a HD is making a different noise, one it didn't used to make, it's time to look for a new one.

My 3200KS is noticably louder than my old WD 800JB and 2500JB ever were. However, its the same sounds, just a little louder. Fortunately, I got used to it really quick and sort of enjoy knowing my HD is grinding away at my feet.

Have no issues with the WD2500KS regarding clunking...But did have a big problem with temps.

Thread about it in 'Cooling'..Had to RMA them in the end & had no problems since.

If you're pleased with the performance of the drive, I suggest you consider vibration-decoupling the drive.

Excellent discussion and photos of various methods and effectiveness at silentpcreview, from elastic-cord-suspension to foam-suspension.

Hope this helps!
