Been messing around trying different drinks lately and there are some that you actually light on fire(pretty friggin cool). Just wondering, 1) what proof does a liquor have to be to light it on fire and 2) any tips on how to do it with out burning myself horribly? Thanks.

I'm not trying be cool, I just think I'd like to try and make one of these flaming drinks because the drink sounds cool. Dr. Pepper shot seems to be the most popular.

You can actually light almost any liquor on fire. All you have to do is heat it so the alcohol vapor accumulates at the top.

Normally 80 proof vodka won't light. However, put it in a metal spoon. Hold a lighter underneath the metal spoon and heat if for a few seconds. Then try lighting it on fire.

You're military? Coast Guard?

Flaming shots were all the rage when I was in Combat Arms.

I never blew out a Flaming Dr. Pepper before drinking it. You drop the shot in the beer and chug it.

I highly advise you to not do this while drunk :D

We almost burnt down my friend's apartment after trying this one time while wasted.

Oh don't worry. We light kitchen sponges soaked in everclear and throw them at each other. We got it covered.

What recipe you guys use for the Dr Pepper shot? id like to try it.

Pint of beer, Shot of Amaretto.

Heat the shot glass with Amaretto in it.
Light the alcohol vapor of the Amaretto on fire.
Drop shot into beer.
Drink

LS20 substitued the Bacardi 151 below for the Amaretto. If you're at a bar, this is what they're going to do because they don't have the time to heat the Amaretto until the alcohol vapor collects.

Yeah, but mixing guns and alcohol can lead to some really funny Darwin Awards.

Or mixing alcohol with a lot more alcohol can lead to Gaghalfrunt. Just ask your dad, if he didn't skip.

Yeah, flaming dr. pepper is a shot of amaretto laced with 151. The 151 is then ignited with a lighter, and the shot is dropped into a half-glass of beer. This puts out the flame, at which point you chug away. And chug quickly, because the stuff tastes absolutely HORRIBLE if you let it sit at all after mixing.

151 is the alcohol most commonly used for flaming drinks in bars. Everclear is also flammable straight out of the bottle, but I'd imagine it might almost be TOO much so...and besides that, 190+ proof liquor is illegal in at least a few states.

But yeah, never attempt to drink anything when it's actually on fire. And never tell the former hooters waitress/bartender who just poured your friend a triple shot of 151 in a plastic cup to light it up, because she'll do it, thereby melting a good portion of said cup. That was a bad night.
