Question for Adoboe Photoshop users...

I have blue text and I want a white lining(border) around each of the letters. How do I go about doing this?

Drop shadow with 0% transparency and 0 offset?

Drop Shadow settings:

Normal (Choose a Color)

Spread 100
Size (whatever you want, start with 2 or 3 pixels)


Your text remains editable using my method.

Erm, none of those ideas sound right except for maybe the above. The best way is Layer > Layer Styles > Outerglow with blending mode Normal and color blue. Thats the "correct" way and will give you what you want.

Do what gsaldivar suggested except choose "Stroke" instead of "Drop Shadow"

You can pick a color and the pixel width of the outline.

There is no spread option. You are probably thinking of dropping a shadow RIGHT in the middle of where the original text is right? But the drop shadow option forces you to put down an angle so the shadow will lean towards one side. Plus I want the text itself to have a regular shadow so if I use the drop shadow option to make the white outer lining, I won't be able to give the text a real shadow.

Yeah that's the way I found to be closest except it gives it a "glowing" effect as the name suggests. I wanted to see if there's another way to make the white lining more defined and sharp. I tried putting blur to 0 but that still makes the white lining a little bit fuzzy.

In the old version you can use Notfred's method, but your text will not be editable afterwards.

i don't see the spread option either. i only see MODE, OPACITY, BLUR, AND INTENSITY. i've played w/ these options and i can't find one that will give me a well defined outer glow. i don't want that blurriness.

God almighty - don't use a drop shadow.

Use the outerglow option set to NORMAL from SCREEN. 100% opacity.

I'm in 7.0. Sorry, it's been so long since I've used 5.5, I don't remember how many features are missing from it.

Try duplicating your text layer, rasterize the layer underneath, select the text, and either "Grow", "Expand", or "Outline" the selection incrementally (filling it with the desired color). This is clumsy, but it should work in all PS versions.

ah, 5.5... in that case, create a new layer underneath the text, then select the text (ctrl+click the text layer) then go to Select>Modify>Expand, put in the number of pixels you want the outline to be, click okay, then fill it in with the the paint bucket

edit: pretty much what gsaldivar said right above me

edit2: outer glow also works

actually that didn't seem to work. expand creates a big border around the entire text instead of each individual letters. border is probably what you meant. i did that, render the layer, and then filled in the outline w/ the color i want BUT it's opaque. it's not a solid white outline around the text. anything else i can do?

Not sure what you mean... opaque=solid

You tried Layer>Effects>Outer Glow and turning the intensity up?

To make sure you are selecting individual letters, you have to control-click on the text layer as Elitebull suggested.

Do you want to post your PSD file for someone to take a look at? I might still have a copy of PS 5.5 laying around here somewhere....

Here is an example of what I'm trying to duplicate. Picture is a bit blurry because I took it w/ my camera phone but you see the white lining around the text. I don't know if you can see it but it's more of a well defined outline rather than a blur, which is what I have now.
