Question: Enermax 92mm Adjustable Fan

I just received the UC-9FAB-B fan in the mail today. I think it's defective, but I was wondering if anything special must be done to control the speed? I've tried plugging it into 2 different fan headers on the mobo (an NF7-S) and also using a 4 pin adapter and there is no change. Also, I don't know if my motherboard is reporting it's speed correctly. It says it's running at 2900rpm (it's max is 2500?) and my cpu is running hotter now than when i had a 28cfm 80mm YS-tech on my slk900a. I think this one will have to be RMA'd.

2900 is probably right for the max. I doubt they use nice pots, probably 20% or 15% ones. I would also say that these fans are poor against restriction. Good case fans, not so good CPU fans.
Does it feel and sound like it is pushing a lot of air if you just hold it in free air? If so, the fan is likely fine, you just should get someling like a Panaflo for the CPU.

It really doesn't make much noise at all, on the heatsink or off. When I hold it, it seems to be pushing a fair amount, but not the 60cfm or so that it is supposed to at top speed. Overall, I'm not that happy with it, and since the speed adjustment doesn't work I'm hoping I can return it and get my money back.

Sounds like the pot is broken at the bottom end. At max, it shoudl really push some air. It's almost silent at the low end, with just a bit of motor noise, but reasonably loud at the max.

Also, is the mobo's reported speed from the BIOS or a program? I've used a few mobos that read higher speeds (MBM lets you adjust for such things).

Thanks for the help Cerb. It is hardly audible when running, and I'm using mbm to get the speed, which it reports at ~2900rpm. I guess that the reading might be off then too as well as the pot not working. I'm looking into returning it. I was going to get one from newegg, never had a problem with anything from them, but it was out of stock, so I ordered from another store, turns out it just came in again today.

Well, one of those specific fans is cooling my FX 5900 XT right now...the pot works fine, and it is annoyingly loud, even suspended (so no vibrations out to the case), at full blast, and has enough pressure to change its angle when that high.

I have that fan, its ok, Probably not the best cpu can is what i am finding. I might replace with another 92mm fan. At 1800rpm it runs pretty quiet. at 2000 rpm it is ok, but at max (2600) it is quiet loud and moves quite a bit of air.
