Question Dual Core CPU's

I recently built a C2D system, my question is regarding programs that use both cores. I thought in general when you run a multi threading app on a dual core chip it will throttle back when you're doing something that's processor intensive and open another app, so there's not a lot of slow down or lag?

I was rendering videos in Vegas 7, which is very CPU intensive with very little HD use. When I try do something else while it's rendering my system crawls, IE will take 10 seconds to open up. I have 2 gigs of memory, and typically the projects I'm rendering are not huge, like maybe 10 minutes of video. What do I not have set up right? Or is my impression that if you have a C2D chip it will throttle back core usage on a multi threading app to keep your system running smoothly not correct?

you can probably avoid the slowdown... hopefully

hmm, try lowing the vegas7 process priority to below normal and/or try setting affinity of vegas7 to core 1 only, so just uncheck core 0. you can do this in task manager.

the only other reason i can think of would be if vegas7 is using a ton of memory or pagefile

thanks for the reply, I've tried lowering the process priority without much luck, will check the affinity thing didn't know about that the damn option is right there clear as day to ha thanks I'll report back but that should definitely help, even if it increases my rendering times 50% that's good as long as I can use my system normally while rendering.

*EDIT* worked beautifully! took a lot longer to render obviously but I could use the system as if nothing was running awwwh thanks for the tip man.
