Question concerning Arctic Silver/HSF/CPU

What should I use to wipe the old Arctic Silver off of my heatsink? Also, I've been having to take my CPU off and putting it back on so much I have alot of goop flowing off the die. Is this a bad thing or not?
 
Artic Silver is slightly conductive. As long as it is not around any bridges or anything else it should be fine though.
 
Just remember, after cleaning, do not use your bare Finger, as the oils will contaminate the AS3. Use plastic wrap or something to this nature to apply. To remove, use Isopropyl Alcohol and q-tips...works great for small places. Very controlable also. Enjoy!😀

I always use my finger and have never had a problem (that I can tell!! 🙂 )

I tried the credit card method and it was hotter than when I spread it with my finger.

Weird, I know, but true.
 
wow, those are some detailed instructions... and to think, i squirted a bit of actic silver 3 onto the die and used the tip of the syringe to spread it around

then i just plopped the HSF on there, making sure to move it ALL AROUND since it is a pain in the arse to get on... haha.. oh well, it works and my athlon 2000 stays cool around 36C with a volcano 9 that thermally adjusts... gets up to about 41C during gameplay... at least that;s what my bios reported after my vidcard overheated cause thte comp to reboot 😉
 
isopropyl (the high 90's% variant is best) and qtip
i ususally dont even bother with isopropyl...just use a couple qtips, make it all nice and shiny lol

for applying, take a plastic bag and use it to rub the as onto the die VERY THINLY...should be less than that width of a piece of paper

after that, take whats left and rub it onto heatsink around whree it would make contact with the core...around the middle....and then wipe excess off with like toilet paper or whateer you have handy (u just wanna fill the pits and whatnot, not use it to glue it on lol)
 
I remove it by wiping most of it off with something and then rubbing it with 91% alcohol. As far as application, I squeezed some out and then used an Exacto knife to spread it around, using it sort of like a butter knife. I have never been able to get anywhere near the small amount they show in the one picture on AS's site. Whenever I push on my tube nothing comes out, so I push a little harder, nothing, nothing, nothing, and then BAM I get this pile of goo. It's always way more than I wanted to put on. I end up scraping most of it off and tossing it away (now I know why they sell it in three oz. minimums - about two of those ounces are going somewhere not on core).

good thing i had my tbird and was gonna apply it to that as well, as i used wahtever was not needed on my friends p3 on my tbird

the key is to put steady pressure on it...and leave it..dont keep pushin harder and harder lol
 
How about instead of 10 people giving the same instructions, you just let the guy read the Arctic Silver application page and then answer any questions if he has any!
 
Ah damn. I put a big gob of that stuff on the cpu core, then just plopped the heatsink on top. I think I'm gonna return the cpu and get a new one.
 
I used carburetor cleaner to get the Artic Silver off of the CPU, then rinse with alcohol, then used canned air to "blow dry". No scrubbing involved.

Just a note: If you use to much of this stuff I think you will be surprised how much will creep out onto your heatsink and then collect dust.

Just read the instructions on the arctic silver page. It says to twist the plunger (with the cap on the tube) to loosen it up, then take the cap off and apply slight pressure to the plunger. Works every time for me.🙂
