😀 Here's a doozy....
Me: Regular User with light gaming and occasional video and audio work.
My GOAL: Gaming heavy bound system, Non-critical.
What I have: 1 x 3Ware 9650SE-4LPML, 4 x 2.5" Samsung Spinpoint MP4 HM640JJ, 640 GB, 7200 rpm all to be used in a desktop setup.
Hardware choice reasoning: I prefer hardware/discreet RAID controller over onboard. Also, I chose the 2.5" HDDs over the conventional 3.5" HDDs because I intend to use them towards being portable drives when the day comes when SSDs become more affordable. My 2.5" HDDs have more storage space than an SSD. I do have an option to use a 1TB Samsung F3 as my storage.
Questions:
a. I don't have an SSD since they are out of my reach as of the moment. What raid setup (available to me: RAID Levels 0, 1, 5, 10, Single Disk, JBOD) perfomance wise, read, write, access time is best for my setup with the listed hardwares I have?
b. What Raid setup can get me the "closest" to SSD area experience? I know I'm being delusional here but, just the closest setup to even the suckiest of SSDs.
c. Best short stroking percentage or partition size?
d. Best stripe size? 16K, 32K, and 128K are the only ones available to me.
d. 3 x RAID 0 plus 1 x backup plausible? Thoughts? System is not intended to be critical. Below is what I originally intended to do with the limited knowledge and research that I have:
»»» 3 x RAID 0 and short stroked to 20%
»»» Acronis-ed, back-uped image of Windows installation from x3 RAID0 to the single 4th drive.
»»»4th drive = will serve as 1 x backup + storage for the otherwise critical stuff (documents and whatnot).
🙁 ???
