Question answered: Why does the Retail Thermoengine wiegh more? (pics cut open!))

These pics will explain all (top pic test units, bottom retail unit)

Now what really made the thermoengine stand out that it had this internal heat pipe...where is it in the retail version? Now this would explain its wieght, performance should be alot less then shown in reviews. I think the ppl that bought these kinda got cheated expecting the performance they saw in reviews.
Best guess is they took it out cause it would have been to costly to keep competive pricing with the heatpipe. Hope it wasn't done intentionaly we don't need another Thermaltake that bullshits all the time.

Yes i know im a little late on this...i never liked the thermalengine so i don't keep up with it 😛 But hey theres pics! 🙂

Good find GiZzO.

I do disagree with your statement about its "internal heat pipe". The hollow core was no such thing. A heat pipe has a fluid in it that turns to gas when heated, and returns to fluid when cooled.

The problem is these guys acknowledged the cahnge in production models, but then still sent out hollow core units to reviewers... Sending out one unit to review and another unit to sell is quite fraudulent...

Hmmm, mine has a metal tab on top-where the fan sits--does this mean I got one of the good ones? Do the "lesser" retail ones have this? Could I be so lucky??

i suppose thermosonic's first shipments did have that chamber or whatver it is...there's actually nothing in there...that space just encourages the heat to rise up the walls and out to the fins since it's designed so uniquely. azzo.com had 700 of the first shipments...i don't know if they still have them...i also don't know if thermosonic is trying to cut corners by leaving out that chamber so it wouldn't be as expensive to produce, and hence the heavier weight...although they claim there is no performance difference...but with all the threads popping up about their little lie...obviously there is a difference. that's too bad though...i was gonna get one...

I already ordered my Thermoengine from overclockers.co.uk and spoke to them today about the type of HS I'll be getting. They claim their shipping units are wiht a hollow core but somewhat smaller and admit they differ from the testing sample they reviewed (which was the non-anodised version). Will post results asap.

RustyNale,

The metal tab is part of the clip. You have to remove the fan AND the clip and look at the top of the heatsink itself.

Nevin,
Thanks for the info, I didn't take the heat sink off when I mounted the 80mm fan, didn't feel like taking the psu out to get at the clip. I got mine from Azzo almost a month agao, I may have lucked out and got one of the good ones. I still think it's fraud of some sort to entice with one kind but actually sell another.
