My brother in law said he found a decent deal on a laptop at his Costco. With the holiday season approaching, something better may always come along.

just curious, Costco shows a 90 day return policy... No restocking fees, right?

I got a week ban for calling someone a name. Since then I have seen numerous name callings, some worse some not. I've been fuming about it ever since.

Why is this a problem? He is within his rights to return the laptop if he chooses, so why is this a big deal?

If he returns it, how is the OP any different than all of you that buy/rebuy for price match purposes?

Besides, he is asking about policy >>IF<< he returns it.

"For quite some time, we have been firm and adhered to a strict set of guidelines. Our goal was to err on the side of maintaining a very clean, professional and well mannered forum that would reflect the ethics and ideals expressed on the AnandTech.com main site.

Granting our moderators anonymity was designed to help gaurd them while enforcing our somewhat rigid guidelines. The goal was to set up a buffer that could protect them from dealing with the flack that necessarily comes with a heavily moderated community. Unfortunately, this was met with mixed success due to the lack of security built in to earlier versions of our forum software.

To top that off, our dedicated moderators have been unfairly saddled with the burden of responsibility for the rules that AnandTech has expected them to enforce. An undercurrent of mistrust and suspicion formed a disconnect between some of our members and the moderators who deserve nothing but the utmost respect and appreciation."

Have it your way. We love to see you smile.

There's enough deals on the Internet to avoid paying taxes. Skip Costco, get a cyberspace life.

Buying it, keeping it sealed in the box, and returning it if he finds a better deal is no big deal.

Buying it, using it, and returning it if he finds a better deal is allowed by the return policy, but is really abuse IMO. It's certainly not something I'd do - and I could; right now I could return my Xbox 360 to Costco and get a new one with two good games for about $100 less than I paid before. Not going to do it though; I wouldn't mind if my 360 broke and I had to return it, but I'm not going to return a perfectly good item that I'm very happy with to save a few bucks. Costco makes their return policy intentionally liberal to serve their customers; in doing so, they open themselves to abuse of the return policy by people who use it for reasons it isn't intended. The end result is that the abusers abuse it so much that they make the policy more restrictive like they did with TVs. People were buying TVs and upgrading for free every year. Now they don't have a lifetime return policy on TVs. The abusers screwed the non-abusers. If he opens the box, the laptop can no longer be sold as new. It'll go back to the manufacturer and it'll be sold for less money as a refurb. I don't think it's right to make the manufacturer pay for the OP's brother-in-law to rent a laptop for free from Costco until he finds a better deal. That's my opinion, and that's how I live my life.

Thanks for all those who helped. Not sure why some of you are calling for a ban for me asking a simple question - as i stated in the OP, its not even me thats considering buying, its my brother in law, i'm not even a costco member.

Also, why are so many up in arms about possibly returning it? Its not like he would try to return it fraudulently...

The policy notes (thanks for the link above):

Merchandise: We guarantee your satisfaction on every product we sell with a full refund. Exceptions: Televisions, projectors, computers, cameras, camcorders, iPOD / MP3 players and cellular phones must be returned within 90 days of purchase for a refund.

Why wouldn't price be part of the satisfaction guarantee? If he is unsatisfied because its cheaper somewhere else 1-2 months later, that seems reasonable to me. And also, he's not buying with the intention of returning it, he just wants to know the option is there.

Anyway, again, thanks to those who helped...
