If an out-of-state family member signs a vehicle title over to me, is there any kind of tax applicable (aside from ad valorem and such) when I title the car in Georgia? I know if I were to purchase it from an out-of-state dealer, I'd have to pay sales tax, but this is basically a "Here....take this car." situation.

Thanks and apologies if this is the dumbest question ever. 😉

In the states around here, the buyer would pay applicable sales tax to the state of their residency upon applying for tags(plates).

Doh! just read that it was a gift....sorry Ignore me 😱

:Q

Gawd, I love Oregon. 😛

Am I going to need a notarized "Yes, this is really a gift." letter or anything. The GA DMV website doesn't have any info on this.

I did this exact thing and I did a lot of research into it. Maryland didn't care that it was a gift. They were going to give me a state tax credit based on the rate that the source state charged. For example, assume Maryland's import tax rate is 5%. Assume it was coming from Georgia and Georgia tax rate was 3%. Maryland would charge me 2% of the blue book value of the car (independantly of what I paid for it).

If the tax rate was higher than Maryland (say California at 7%), then Maryland would charge me the minimum $37 tax rate.

When I told her the car was a gift from out of country (Canada), then she said that I would pay the minimum $37 tax rate. However, I needed to import it through Customs and pay their taxes instead.

Just got off the phone with the DoR: they said there's no applicable sales tax provided the car is currently titled to an individual and not a business.

Now I just have to unload one of my cars.....anyone want to buy a 1993 Sentra? 😛

Property tax on a car?

That's not the kind of property that tax applies to, is it?
