Question about XMBCbuntu

I'm confused, is this an addon to Ubuntu or a standalone version of the OS? Do I install it to an empty HD or do I first install Ubuntu??

This page is full of gibberish and yet fails to answer this most basic of questions. And btw, do I have to deal with all this gibberish to get it to work?

I got it install and had it working good. Then I #$%^& destroyed it. I exited XBMC and when I got to the desktop I was prompted to install a release. I have no idea what this release was but since I was prompted I assumed it was important. Trying to install it wasted the entire system. I got gibberish error message and it's stuck there. Even if I reboot, shutdown/restart, or hit the reset switch, it always comes back to the same screen and after a couple of times it's hung to boot.

Guess the message is, never ever exit XBMC . 🙁

Try removing it from the command prompt. I think Ubuntu gives you a recovery option in grub.

apt-get remove PackageName

Got a reinstall running as I type. I basically lost control of the system so saw no other recourse.

The reason I exited XBMC was to see if I had to install a third party video driver. It's been my experience that this needs to be done after a new install. When it got to the desktop I was looking at a screen of bizarre artifacts like breakup, fuzzy windows, hover over messages not disappearing when you hover away and a few more so something isn't right.

But I will admit that it did work correctly first time I fired it up. This is why I'm reinstalling. But I won't be exiting XBMC again.

XBMCbuntu is meant to work as a standalone. You would only need a driver update if you were using XBMC as an addon to a full-fledged OS. I'd only be concerned with something like VDPAU/VAAPI or audio out not working depending on your setup.

You could install a full *buntu OS, get the XBMC packages then set it as the primary login session if concerned about updates.

In my experience with FOSS I have come to the conclusion that if the documentation sucks, the code probably sucks too.

This is an HTPC so all I ever really need to see is XBMC but I thought I needed access to the underlying OS for maintenance purposes. Kinda strange that XMBC would have an exit option if it trashed the whole system.

I did a reinstall and that fixed it. Gonna try it for a while and see how it works. I can always do like IGemini suggests if it doesn't work out. I just thought it was a neat idea to have custom OS designed just for HTPCs.

I have OpenELEC (XBMC) running on a Raspberry Pi ($35 wonder) and I can SSH into it if I need to access the filesystem. I am using wireless (USB) networking, but since it has built-in RJ45 a successful network connection is almost guaranteed. If the worst comes to the worst (failed overclocking), I can take the SD card (or hard drive) and attach it to a different machine to make necessary changes.
Edit: After a few weeks of use, I must say that OpenELEC on Raspberry PI proved to be just sufficient to play Hidef Videos. But the user experience won't be very good. Partly because of my Sharp ACQUOS TV, I am unable to use XBMC.

Been running it for a few days now and it's been flawless. Just gotta remember not to click "exit" and all will be well. It might be my imagination but videos seem to be much smoother than under XBMC/Windows.

I tried Xmbc in ubuntu and it just did not do anything for me and it messes up things, besides i just want to stream live video and that i can do without Xmbc.
