Question about XBL gamer "cards"

When you're looking at your own (or your friend's) gamer tags or cards or whatever they call them, a lot of people have a number on the top right of the picture inside of an orange bar.

What is that?

I've seen some with no number, or up to 6.

years of membership. i have a 6 on mine. but i was late to gold. had 2 years on xbox before i switched to gold.

Is 8 the highest, or 7? I have 7, but think I was late too.
More proud of that than my gamerscore. Have seen it go through all the stages. Would a form of Live even work on the original XBox? Doubt its worth turning on to see the "dashboard" on that even.

Ahhh...that makes total sense. I knew ATOT would know!

Is that new since the fall update? I dont think i've ever seen it before...

8 should be the highest. Live launched in late 2002 I believe. I bought the $50 pack on launch day and to this day, the MotoGP demo that came with it was some of the most fun I've ever had online. I only have 4 on my gamercard though, since I took a year off from console gaming back around 2005. I had to use a new Live ID since you couldn't change your email address back then and the one I had was no longer viable.
