simple...XFree 4.01 + NVidia drivers for XFree 4.01. You'll be amazed how well the modular desig works -)

What version of XFree comes with Slack 7.1?.. i'd check but i'm not at home right now.. if (my hunch), i'm with 3.x now... where can i get the 4.x package?

you can get it here (primary XFree86 ftp server). Grab binary tarballs and follow the install procedures available here. Since you own a DDR and not GTS card, then you can stick with those drivers. ALternativly you can download the Nvidia drivers for XFree 4.01 (make sure you grab the right version). They are available here.
