Question about wooden table..

I bought a wooden table almost a year ago and after going through 7 months of Friday Poker nights its showing some wear.

Its got a few scratches and one incident with a permanent pen.

The table appears to have some sort of finish on the top of it that you could scrape through to see a much lighters color wood. I was wondering if after another year or two I could have someone sand off the finish and re-apply it?

I dont know anything about furniture so I dont know if this is possible or not.

If it's a scratch in the finish, then stripping and refinishing would fix it. If it's down to the wood, you'd probably want to strip it, apply some wood filler, and then refinish.

Most furniture these days will have a toned stain finish on veneer. The toned stain gives the wood a much more uniform finish but is impossible to duplicate on a repair job. The stain is sprayed on much the same as paint.

You could try lightly sanding the entire table to rough up the surface with a 220 paper. That may take the sharpie off. Apply a similar color stain to any light areas. Keep in mind you are not trying to remove the stain color, just the shiny finish. The scratch you are probably not going to get rid of because if you try and sand it out you will go through the very thin veneer.

Recoat with a poly coating. Do not expect furniture quality finish unless you take it to a pro. Effort vs. return, get a table pad.
