Question about wireless pci cards...

as far as i know, all wireless cards are PC Cards/PCMCIA cards, they just make adapters for them to go into PCI slots (the internal slots of desktops)

this is probably because laptops are the primary market for wireless

Theoretically...all the documentation I've found on this card say that it's basically just a PCMCIA-to-PCI bridge, therefore you should be able to just pull out the card inside for use on a laptop. As usual, however, YMMV.

yeah im sort of wondering why i never see deals about wireless pci cards so i guess they just make adapters...i was thinking i could save myself a buck or two but i guess i must get the combo =\

Yes, you can pull the PC card and use it in any PC card (aka PCMCIA) controller. In fact, most of those PCI adapters are PC card controllers (as numark said). However, some adapters are a different breed known as PLX.

There are a few PCI wireless clients that are not the PC card + PCI adapter variety, but a single piece design (for example the D-Link DWL-520; Linksys has one as well).

In general, for desktop PCs, USB clients are recommended. But with one of these, you have a bit more flexibility.

I personally use the Orinoco Gold PC card client inside D-Link's PCI adapter (it came with a DWL-500 kit, containing the DWL-650 PC card + PCI adapter). The DWL-650 client is collecting dust as it's blown away by the Orinoco client. The PCI adapter is just a Ricoh Cardbus controller.

i need a desktop one =( too many wires running throughout the house

Then I would get a USB adapter which is best for desktop PC's.

I have a brand new factory sealed Netgear MA101 which I could sell to you for a reasonable price.
