Question about wireless network cards and routers

say i have a linksys wireless network card and a belkin wireless router or any other wireless router/card combination where the brand doesn't match.

will they work together or do both the card and router have to be the same brand? i'm a noob at this.

No, the brands do not have to match.

It is a standard, just like regular ethernet.

Well...that's partly right.
The standard the wireless equipment uses must match (or be compatible).
The current wireless standards and their compatibility is as follows:

Standard ............. Compatible With
802.11b .............. 802.11b, 802.11g
802.11a .............. 802.11a, 802.11g
802.11g .............. 802.11b, 802.11a, 802.11g

And it is true the equipment does not have to come from the same vendor.
However, some vendors like to include certain non-standard "features" that may not be able to be used with equipment from other vendors.
