Question about Wireless Local Number Portability....

Hello,

I had a question on WLNP. I have a current Cingular Contract that ends on the 11th of May. I would like to switch to Verizon Wireless within the next week so I can take the phone to Germany with me (Motorola V710 = MP3 Player). ANyway am I able to get a VZW number now and then just switch over to the number I currently have let's say when I get back. Or does that not work that way and I have to switch the number when I first sign up?
