Question about Wireless and another about VPN ...

Hi,

I'm figuring out how would wireless and VPN work with an existing domain:

1# Wireless

When I turn a laptop on, after reboot, I receive a tray ballon saying it has found a wireless network.

I opened it, I got a list of 5 wireless lans around, only one with a lock on it :Q but ok, that is not the problem (not mine, anyway).

My question is, if on my local network I add a wireless access point, how will it connect to the domain? I mean, only after I login, I have the chance to select my wireless lan ... then I'm already logged in ... do I have to logout so I can have the user/password/domain login screen? And will it THEN access the domain?

If that's how it works, then when I change to another wireless lan, I'll have to do 2 logins (1 to change lan, and another to connect to the domain).

2# VPN

A question similar to the above one ... let's say I have a properly setup lan, with VPN access point. The lan has a windows domain server.

Now let's say I configure a laptop, so that it can access that same VPN. The way I see it, I would turn the laptop on, login on my account, then kind of "select" the VPN ... my laptop would then use my internet connection to reach my remote network ... but how will it work with the domain setup?

Will it provide me with a user/password/domain login screen like if I was connecting directly in the office?

On both this areas (Wireless / VPN) I have no experience. I'm now gathering info about them, and throw in some questions, so that I can setup a near-future test environment.

Thanks

The Intel Wireless drivers have a utility/driver that will connect to the wireless before you login. You create profiles and it searches for a wireless network that matches a profile after you hit enter on the login screen.

re: #2 -- You will be able to work in offline mode. Once you have connected to the server via the VPN you will be able to go "online" and things will work. You should end up with a small comuter icon by your clock to indicate being offline. I've set this up in the past and it works fine.

And what about logon scripts that map drives, etc, etc ... will they still work and map them accordingly?

Use Windows Wireless configurator. Go to advanced and make sure that your network is first on the preferred networks list. It will then work just fine.
