Question about Windows XP and Product Key

My friend's computer needs XP reinstallation. He didn't give me his XP CD, but his computer case has the Product Key. Can I use my XP CD and enter his Product Key? Thanks.
 
Mostly yes. If you have a generic cd (like from Newegg) and you match the Windows product (home / pro) and the type (retail / oem) it will work. If you don't, it won't work.
 
Retail keys go with retail CD versions
OEM keys go with OEM versions
Dell OEM CDs are a different animal.
