Question about Win2k permissions in user mode

Hi,

I'm trying to help a non-profit organization with their anti-virus software. I believe they're using AVG. The problem is, AVG has an option that lets it automatically download and install virus definitions, but win2k doesn't allow installation of anything when it's in user mode. The guy in charge of the organization doesn't want people installing stuff when they login and he doesn't want to manually install the virus definitions. Is there a way to just allow installation of stuff to just certain directories? Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

Probably just have to tweak the permissions on the directories it needs to write to (mainly the definations directory). Or you could try to script it yourself and schedule it to run as an admin user or SYSTEM.

Thanks for the response. Is there also an option that just allows/disallows installation of programs by itself without even checking the folders and their file permissions?

No, because all software installation is, is writing some files and registry entries so there's no way to differentiate normal file operations from software installation.

Would there be any need to modify permissions (if there is one?) to the registry in user mode?
Again, thanks.

I doubt it, but you never know, it all depends on the software in question.
