At the risk of sounding like a moron, I have a question for you guys:

Look at this picture here.

1) In order for an application (in this example WoW) to work properly (IE: not be distorted), does the application have to support widescreen mode?

2) Does it just depend on the videocard?

3) Does it just depend on the output display device like a widescreen LCD/plsma?

4) If you have a VC and LCD widescreen combo working, would all games just run in widescreen and XP would scale it accordingly?

Thanks in advanced, guys.

Some of the newer graphics cards suport widescreen resolutions.

I would guess some newer games would also, including wow. I can look when I get home.

We did PvP on Manneroth, was so fun. But it was laggy as all hell.

The undead casters roasted us repeatedly w/ AoE spells.

My little dwarf pally couldnt take the damage and fell many a times.

I think the game has to support it in order for it not to be distorted. Its nice when FPS support it, often players will just crank up their FOV which obviously gives them a larger field of view all the while forcing that much more into the same space, a wide screen would take care of such a problem, and to a greater extent a 3 screen setup such as what Matrox tried to pimp with the Parhelia. Granted the Parhelia is barely fast enough for driving just one monitor let alone 3 ;)

Yes, the game has to support widescreen. The vast majority of games these days support widescreen, or usually you can edit it in ini or registry to get widescreen. About half of all widescreen games aren't true widescreen. You get widescreen, but the image is stretched. But i haven't seen a game where the stretched widescreen bothered me, and 99% of the time i can't tell it's been stretched unless i have something to compare it to. I would definitely rather play 1920x1200 stretched than 1600x1200 not-stretched.

I started to play widescreen back with my Radeon 8500... so yes, all videocards can do widescreen unless you're using really antiquated stuff.

Yes.

No, not all games run in widescreen. When i first got my Sony GDM-FW900 3 years ago, i would say only about 20% of games supported widescreen. Nowadays i would say 90% of games support widescreen... and infact, all this year, i haven't seen a game that doesn't. Now, not all games will support 1920x1200, but they'll support other widescreen resolution like 1280x800 or something. And just because a game supports 16:10 widescreen (PC monitors), doesn't mean it will support 16:9 widescreen (HDTVs).

Thanks Hardcore. Good input. I guess I've never really paid attention, but does BF:1942 and Vietnam support widescreen? I'm suure Doom 3 does, becuase I remember seeing Q3 with widescreen support. What about Far Cry?

The game doesn't have to support widescreen depending on your connection, your display, and the card you use. I play games on my widescreen (480p and 1080i native support), and to avoid configuration issues or interlaced resolutions I use the YPbPr output of my AIW and use Center Timing Support. For my setup, I set any game to 1280x1024 resolution which maps the output to the center of my Widescreen Display with small bars on both sides. This allows game menus to be properly displayed, no need for powerstrip or custom timings.

Other than that, there is trying to use custom timings using powerstrip, and a game that does support widescreen resolutions. It might be better with a native 720p display, because the progressive scan 720p is much better than the 480p my display supports, and playing at 1080i requires a powergful rig for most games and 30Hz refresh for interlaced resolutions is horrible. Playing in a window allows some games to work as well.

The CTS in Catalyst drivers is the best approach I've found for gaming on "my" RPTV, but the majority of gaming I do in front of my CRT, not mt RPTV.
