Here is where I sit now. I have narrowed down my choice between these two cars. Here are the pros and cons of each car.

Pros - Grand Am
CarFax Certified
6 cylinder 3.4 liter with Ram Air
Power Everything
CD player with great sound
Moon Roof
Bigger Car

Cons - Grand Am
It is used - 55,000 Miles
Needs new tires (might get them from dealership)
30 day Engine and tranny warranty

Pros - Cavalier
3 year 36,000 warranty
Brand new - 325 miles
5 Speed
Free state inspections for life

Cons
No power locks, windows
only a 4 banger - not nearly the power of the Grand AM
cd player sucks
Very small car

With all that said. my monthly price for both cars is the exact same. I like driving the Grand Am much more than the cavalier, but the cavalier seems better in the long run.

grand am

any good dealer will let you take the car for a day to have it checked out by your mechanic

I'll walk before I ever drive another Cavalier. I'm no fan of the Grand Am, but at least you know it runs!

Do you want a better car or a warranty? There's your answer.

Oh and BTW the Cavalier is most definitely not significantly slower than the GA. In fact it's probably quicker in the 1/4.

It was inspected by my mechanic. the tires passed inspections, but they are really low on tread. I got quoted on 450 bucks for the new tires. So i asked the salesman if he could get new tires, I am finding out about it today.

I'd say go with the Grand Am.

My Mother has a 1998 cavalier (generally the same body), and I really don't like it at all, its great if you want basic transportion, but I wouldn't purchase one with my own money. The Grand Am is a much nicer looking car, and you have power everything. Call me spoiled, but I wouldn't go back to a car without power everything/keyless entry. Plus that 3.4 is a pretty durable engine, i wouldn't worry about it.

You're right though, the warranty/brand new-ness is inciting, but i'd still rather take the Used Grand Am over the New Cavalier. Any day.

Cavalier. But hey, I'm conservative when it comes to cars. I'd rather take the warranty than a car with almost 60k miles if the price is the same. I'm also not a fan of Power X simply because I've had window motors go out on me before and I refuse to ever deal with that again.
