Question about where to buy

This is not really hardware related, more just economical sense I am looking for about where to purchase a laptop.

I could just go to Best Buy or Compusa; however it seems Dell has better value and performance for less.

So what say you?

I am not normally patient and would much rather just buy from a B & M and have my toy today, but since I am willing to pay $2000 for this, maybe I should go the online route.

I will be using in the classroom as I am a teacher. However, I want to be able to play games on it when I go on vacations. (BF2 and such)

Edited to reflect usage.

I want 2gb memory and a 7200 hdd along with a dual core. Graphics should be 6800 or better.

Dell or Lenovo.

EDIT: oh, you want a power machine. I would say Dell then. BTW, for $2000, it's going to be a tad difficult to get everything you want out of the machine.

If you have some patience and can afford to wait a bit, hold off until a Dell sale. With $2k you can get a very nice laptop.

Likely going to be very difficult to find such specifications at a B&M store; and one is located, it will likely run a premium price.

You'll have more success (and find a better performance to cost ratio) finding machines online.

What does their shipping time look like, under two weeks?
I've placed two orders for Sager/Clevo-based machines (through PC Torque, which no longer resells), and both drop-shipped from Sager Midern in California in well under two weeks.

YMMV, of course (especially depending on component availability).

Does anyone know of any specials going on right now, I am hoping to coincide this purchase with my 29th birthday which is next week.

Thank you.....the Sagers look nice, however I have seen the XPS dells, drool on those too. But yeah, any other considerations when purchasing a laptop online?

Onsite service (if you aren't comfortable opening the machine itself, or do not care for depot/shipping service) and extended warranty.

Most offer a number of options and combinations of the two.

Okay I found a nice dell 30% off, with 2gbm 2ghz, 7200rpm 100gb, 7900gs, 17" for about 2,100 after discount? Think I could do better?

Thak you very much, I hope to buy some laptop today, just gotta configure one under that 2 grand mark.

If I were you, I'd check around at the local Office Max, they have some good deals with rebates at times. I saved over $400 on the last laptop I bought there.

Also keep in mind come tax time that if you use the computer for mostly classroom related stuff that you can take up to $250 for the educator deduction.

the laptop you want sounds like overkill for the classroom.

It is I admit, but I would like the opportunity to game on it at home. Plus, on activity days, sometimes the kids love to see something other then a textbook.
