A few weeks ago I did a search for a website name at godaddy.

Today I want to get it and register it( not at godaddy)

I do a search at whois, and about a week ago godaddy registered it. Of course now I can buy it from them for 20 times the cost.

Is this normal business with these firms?

Yes, you are fucked. Rule of thumb - don't search for the desired domain name until you are ready to purchase.

EDIT >> Also, don't use Godaddy.
