question about watercooling in general..

All the recent topics about watercooling have made me raise an eyebrow in interest... I wouldn't go for a huge custom kit, just something (like was mentioned, the reserator plus) that I can learn and experiment with..

My big question is, for those of us who are always tweaking our PC's, how easy is it to say, move your reserator plus watercooled PC from your office to a work bench to fiddle with it? Do you have to have someone walk behind you with the reserator because the tubes don't detach? I mean, the tubes would be full of water right, detaching them would be a nono? Do you have to unhook the cpu/vga block before moving your rig anywhere? Or does it have some support for bleeding out the lines so that you can unhook the tubes, then re-prime it when you're ready to hook everything back up?

I guess I'm just curious about the ease of use and semi-portability of using a system like that.. I'm in my pc once a week probably, changing wiring here, adding this, removing that.. So I don't wanna waste the starter cash if it's a pain in the ass...

Thanks!

Well... ideally you hook up the water system and run it for a day or two to detect any leaks BEFORE you put any hardware in. So if you're planning to unhook it or anything, you may re-introduce leaks/air to the system.

Bad idea.

I've always considered WC to be something that you only do on a stationary rig that you don't plan on upgrading often... mostly because those damn tubes get in the way worse than anything.

Truth be told, water cooling is really only practical when you are a hardcore overclocker. For the average user, it really doesn't do much.

If you're in there all the time, then I would probably just pass on the WC, or learn to keep your hands off. 😉

I think the reserator (since it has a seperate water cooling "tower"), it would be near impossible to move around by yourself. I just recently installed my first water cooling kit and the radiator unit attaches to the back of the case. This is very easy to move around.

Govtcheez: Yeah, I've seen the ones that bolt onto the backside of the case itself. Totally unsexy lol. I tend to prefer function over form, but if an external reserator/radiator cools just as well or better, I'd rather not have it hanging off the back of my case.

Injury: thanks for your insightful comments. I would tend to agree wtih you, but part of being an "enthusiast" is that you like to learn and experiment with new things! Thats my real goal here, to learn.

So no one knows of any kits that have like quick disconnects, or anything that makes disconnecting it temporairily not a royal pita?

Moving the Reservator is a bad idea . . . I've heard stories about people who tried that and ended up with well . . . let's just say a "flooded system"

Quick disconnects? We can dream can't we?

Depending on the tubing you use, it's not all that difficult to buy and install your own quick disconnects. Just make sure that you get high flow disconnects.
