Question about VPN servers and routers

Ok - so if I have a router that supports a vpn tunnel, then all I need to do is install a vpn device in between the router and modem like a smoothwall box right?

If you are going to use a smoothwall box, I would put it in between the router and the modem. ie...Modem -> Smoothwall -> Router.
Here's a good Link on VPN's courtesy of JackMDS

did you even read my post? I said that's where I would put it.

anything special I need to do with the router besides enable tunnels?

If your router is capable of being a VPN endpoint to create tunnels then all you need is a compatible client. Windows XP has a capable client for both PPTP and L2TP built in.

What model of router do you have?
