Question about Volume Control...

Every once in a while, when I will open my CD drive, or turn on Winamp, or sometimes, for actually no reason at all, my Volume level and Wave volume level will reset itself to a different setting than the one that I had before, and, as of late, it will mute itself. This is really annoying when I am trying to use Winamp as an alarm clock, and it will mute itself just before it turns on. I am running Win2k, if that helps.

Reinstall your sound drivers, see what that does. Try setting the volume at your desired level, and then restarting your comp to see if the settings stick. If so, then I guess you might have to do that from now on. Personally, I like leaving the volume on the computer alone, and I like to adjust volume from my speakers... you may not have that option though.

Thanks for the response. It will also randomly assign itself a set 'default' position at various times, too. This was fine before when it would set itself at maximum volume; I didn't care, because it still worked to wake me up in the morning. However, now that it sets itself on mute, this makes it hard to wake up in the morning.

First, I would invest in a real alarm clock 🙂 Second, you didn't mention if you tried the few things I suggested earlier... If you did and nothing worked, the other thing you might want to experiment with is the IRQ settings in your bios. Try assigning a different IRQ for your sound. Playing with this stuff can be really touchy, and your pc might not like you very much - so make sure you remember what you have changed - but it might help.
