I built a PC for a friend of mine a few months ago. I also bought a laptop earlier this year that came with Vista Basic. Also came with a disk. It was an upgrade disk. I didn't want Vista on the lappy so I wiped it and put XP on there.
I figured I could use the Vista Upgrade on his machine. I installed a legit copy of XP home on his PC in order to use the Vista Upgrade.
Fast forward to today he called me saying it locked him out and said he's been a victim or software piracy, etc.
I don't understand why it's saying/doing that when the copy of XP I installed and Vista upgrade are BOTH legit. Is the Vista I got from the laptop only supposed to be used on that particular laptop? If so then why did it come with an upgrade CD?
Not sure what to do on this. I feel that I paid for the copy of Vista and should be able to use it on whatever system I can(although I realize Microsoft has a different point of view).
I really don't want to have to buy a full version of Vista Home to make this right.
Am I screwed?
