Question about video cards and direct x

Is direct x support something that could be stored in cmos and updated as needed or does it have to be built in to the gpu?

It is not as simple as flashing the cards with a newer bios and expecting them to support the latest version of DirectX. The latest version of DirectX currently supported by video cards is 9.0c. When Windows Vista comes out with DirectX 10, you will need a new video card that supports the new version.
