Question about version of Windows XP Pro

Hi,

I got a promotional version of Windows XP Pro full version last fall. It looks exactly like the retail product that you buy in the stores, but the UPC is: 659556860042 and the there is a number on it that says: 0801 Part No. X08-46836.

Does anyone know what these numbers mean? They look different than the retail product numbers, but like I said, this box looks exactly like the retail product I see in the stores.

TIA,

Sal

Simply.. Is this is a full version of Win XP Pro? The box sure looks like it, but I can't tell for sure because it was a promotional copy.

Thanks again.

Who exactly did you get it from? I know the version I have from the Microsoft company store and the one that my buddy that works there has say NFR on them which means not for retail. I know that usually means that they're crippled in some way, like 2k server you can't upgrade the licensing on, but I don't know if there's anything wrong with XP Pro.

EDIT:

I should say tho, his copy was a company handout, don't know if that's different or not. They were telling their emps that they wanted them all to be able to try it at home. My guess is that if you got it from an authorized channel, it's good.

Actually, NFR is "not for resale" and has a 10 client connection limit hardcoded. So you can only have 10 clients accessing resources on the machine at one time.

I got it from the first Microsoft Channel Partner deal last fall. I had never opened the software and was just looking at the box recently. I did get in on that deal again recently and this time I got a cardboard sleeve that clearly says not for resale. The first one looks exactly like a retail product though. I just wanted to compare it to a retail product. It says nothing about not for resale and the box looks exactly like the retail product on the store shelves at Best Buy. I just don't know if there are different part numbers, etc for what I have vs the retail store product.

Thanks again.

... not even close. It means they cannot be re-sold.

..thats true for all copies of winxp pro and win2k. In order to have more connections you'd need 'server'. has nothing to do with NFR.

Does anyone know what this number means? X08-46836

It doesn't say NFS anywhere on my package. I was looking at a retail copy in Circuit City yesterday and my box looks just like the retail copy. The only thing that I see that's different are the numbers.

Thanks again.

Retail, resale... bah... too many beers will do that to a guy

Need4Speed, have you tested that theory? I have used an NFR win2k server, and it is crippled. You can jack the licenses all the way to 1000 (well, we only did 30) without using the reg codes for them and it doesn't care. As soon as client 11 tries to connect, it's all over.... check this site about versions or do a google search for "NFR windows 2000 server" without quotes of course.

It's amazing what kind of shite you end up with when people try to get away with spending 10% for buisiness software... I doubt they'd be giving away real functional copies of their baby for that cheap of a rate.

I guess I should have been more specific:

Win2k Pro and Winxp Pro (NFR or retail) have the 10 connection limit.

Win2k Server NFR has the 10 connection limit as well, but win2kserver Retail Does not.

Basically Win2k Pro and Winxp Pro included crippled versions of IIS which is used in the Server Editions. It would make sense that Winxx Server NFR would have to be crippled or peeps would be trying to run large serves using NFR software...which of course MS does not want 🙂

Back to Salvador's question...I'm 99% that your copy is fine.
