Hi guys, I am planning to put together a system next week with a A8N-E, A64-3500 (Venice), 1 GB RAM and a PCIe 7800GT etc

Not decided on the monitor yet. I had initially planned to get a Viewsonic VP730b, but when I went to check it out today, I saw that the 16:10 19" VA1912 costs only $30 more. (Singapore dollars)

My question is whether my system will be able to run HL2, Q4 etc smoothly, with **all the eye candy turned up** on this wierd 1440x900 resolution. I dont want to spend money on a 7800GT only to find out that my games run lousy because i bought the wrong type of monitor and the card cannot handle the resolutions lol.

VA1912 owners, please post your impressions about this monitor in general.:)

Also, how does resolution influence the ability of a video card to run a game - is it just the total number of pixels on the screen, or does the aspect ratio also play a part? (1440x900 = 1296000, 1280x1024 = 1310720).

I would guess that those would play pretty similarly, because I have heard that widescreen has a small impact on perforamnce, but mostly what matters is pixels. I would go for the 19", widescreen is the future.

I'm not gonna look up the link for you, but if you just looked up on the Yahoo search engine, "Quake 4" and 7800, you will find reviews, left 'n right on performance impact with the graphics card.

It will run Quake 4 very well, is all I gotta say.

Stelleg, thanks for the info. I suppose the widescreen would be a better choice for watching movies too. I was browsing the widescreen gaming forums, but couldnt find detailed reviews on the VA1912 and how good it is for gaming. I understand that it is a 6-bit panel. So I am a bit apprehensive about banding and color artifacts.

Fire400, I know that the 7800GT can run quake 4 well at 1280x1024 on a 5:4 monitor, but I dont know whether it is suitable for widescreen gaming at the uncommon 1440x900 resolution. I wanted to know if there are any potential problems with speed and image quality with the 7800Gt + VA1912 combo...
