Question about using the Netgear RT314 Gateway Router

Picked up the Netgear RT314 router today....I should add it's quite easy to install and configure.

My question is this though - I have 2 computers on the router...they both are using the "assign IP automically" (cuz the router takes care of that now)....

On one of the computers, I run a http server - I'm still trying to configure the router so that when someone types in my assinged IP (I have @home and my IP is 24.1.75.190), they can access my web server.

Followed the directions on netgears web site (assinging port 80 to my ip of 24.1.75.190), but no luck.

Any suggestions out there? Need more info..let me know and I'll provide it.

Thanx.....

No, you assign port 80 to the LAN ip, which is 192.168.0.x depending on whatever the DHCP server gave your webserver. And you also have to go into menu 21.3 and disable the port 80 filter.

I think you need to assign "static" IPs to each computer. Then disable DHCP on the router. After re-booting the comps. set up the port forwarding (on the router) for the computer you want to run the server on.

I know there must be more. I just don't know what it is.

jmcoreymv:

My DHCP server assigned address is: 192.168.0.2

My question though: how do I assign port 80 to that address?

Also, when I went to menu 21.3 and disabled the port 80 filter - I lost my entire internet connection. Enabled it, back on the net...funky....

And another thing...would "port forwarding" be involved w/all this..to get my original IP (24.1.75.190) to work w/my web server?

If you dont mind me asking, how does this thing perform for you and is it really easy to use? I bought mine a week ago but am waiting till my new puter gets here to use it. Is it really that easy for someone that doesnt run any servers or anything? All I do is surf the net, run email, and online game with @home. Thanks for what you will tell me I hope..LOL

The reason that you lost net connection when you disabled port 80 filter is because it is the last filter in the filter set and it is the one that fowards the packets, so what you have to do is change the one above 80, so that it fowards all matched packets. And you dont have to turn off dhcp but it would be best. Also in menu 15, port 80 = 192.168.0.2

DavidJr: It is real easy. Set the comps to use DHCP, plug the networkcables in, put the power on and you are on the net. It doesnt get much easier than that. Customizations are pretty easy too using telnet (which i prefer over any weird webpage)

Good buy and good luck. :)

Screen shots of my router config

jmcoreymv:

Check out the screen shots I created....can you decifer what I'm doing wrong here? The IP address you see for port 80 - that's the computer I have that runs my web server. I'm guessing in the 3rd picture, there has to be changes - but what changes I have no idea of....Thanx for your help.

Change the Action Matched = Drop to Action Matched = Forward for

I really don't know much about the other routers but I was up and running within 5 mins. This babe is sweet and pretty easy to configure. Now...gotta think of how to open ports for my VPN access to work

If you havent updated the firmware, do it. It enables port forwarding in the Web based utility. Once you're in the utility, go to SUA/NAT. There you type in the IP address of the PC and the port you want opened. If you haven't updated the firmware, you have to telnet to it.
