question about using quake 3 benchmarking utility

when i type timedemo 1 and hit enter it tells me i am not connected to server, do i need to be connected to server to run the benchmark? please give me the commands to type if i am doing it wrong. here is how i was told to do it-
timedemo 1 enter
demo demo001 enter
is that right?

You just enter timedemo 1 {enter}.

you need to use a slash if you've already started a game up

/timedemo 1
/demo demo001


if you haven't started up a game, you won't need the slash
