i have a viewsonic pt775 17"(16" viewable), its max resolution was supposed to be 1600x1200 @ 75hz, but with powerstrip i got to push it up all the way to 2048x1536 @ 60hz...
so i was like.. "woah! is my monitor just kickass or am i damaging it by tweaking it too much or something?"
i was able to run quake3 at 2048x1536... the graphics was amazing.. so freegin clear.. full screen wouldnt work at 32bit mode, but worked fine for 16bit mode..
so the question is..
is it safe to set my monitor at a higher resolution than what it was made to do? im thinking about keeping it at 1920x1440

For starters, check the monitor specifications and make damn certain that the horizontal refresh is lower than the rated maximum.

If both the horizontal and vertical refresh are below the rated maximum, you may be ok. Personally, I would not run a monitor above the rated miximum resolution unless you have the money saved up for a new one.
