Question about using a HD2600XT as a PPU in Crossfire

Ok, so I know that you can link two unlike cards in Crossfire, but the second card is only able to do PPU. What I want to know is, can the HD2600XT be used as a PPU (I've only heard of the X1000 series doing PPU)? Basically, it's going to be my main card now, and then, waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay down the road (like, 3 or 4 years from now, and after getting an Nvidia G92 in like November) imma get a new ATi card. Hypothetically, could I then use that new ATi card as my rendering card and then crossfire it with my HD2600XT and use the 2600 as my PPU?

I wouldn't bother buying a graphics card to do physics rendering... it's been announced but never released.. probably never will... and by the time it does, they'll probably say you'll need something better than a 2600XT..

Well, it's either getting a HD2600XT or a 8600GT, to act as a stopgap for G92 in November. I knew that 8600GT would be trash when I got G92, I just wanted to know if HD2600XT would become trash as well.

Both ATI and Nvidia have said that their hardware is 'capable' of physics processing but neither company have implemented it in their drivers yet. So as it stands you cannot currently run a crossfire+PPU setup, but you never know- that could change in the near future with all these high tech DX10 titles around the corner. If you are looking for a stopgap until the G92 I'd just go for the cheapest out of the 2600XT or 8600GT they're around the same performance and both have advanced video decoding.

Their both saving it for a raindy day-quarter-when they a need a cash cow and margins are low. Then there will be a big announcement, ZOMG Physics offloaded to a PPUGPU, buy a a PPU edition-slimemorydoodadeleventybrandedbyfatalityisaretard Edition Card.

Mad Money Cramer says! Buy Nvidia!!
