question about using 20G HD on legacy PC

I have Digital Celebris Pentium Pro 180Mhz PC. My 6G HD works fine, but I swapped a 20G 7200rpm Maxtor, BIOS only recognizes 8.4G (I know it's the limit of FAT16, but don't know why BIOS only sees 8.4G here). I flashed to the lastest (1.09) BIOS. I also tried 40pin and 80pin IDE cables -- no luck.

I don't want to spend $ on a PCI IDE card. The PC only worthes $30. I want to build a file server and MP3 box from it, so the 20G will be nice.

I will use W2k on it, but I might try W98 too. It has 128MB EDO memory.

Thanks!

8.4 gb is a controller bios limit... NOT a fat16 limit... fat16 limit is 2.1gb .... if your controller cannot recognize over 8.4gb and you flashed the bios, about all you can do is add another controller...

I have the same computer with a maxtor 20gig 5400 drive, I use the maxblast software that came with it and it works fine full 20 meg. The only problem was LILO
didn't seem to care for it but grub worked fine. Hope that helps later todd
