Question about USB cables charging electronics

I'm having trouble charging my phone via USB connection to my computer and I notice the USB cable I'm using doesn't have those cylindrical "blocks" on either ends of the cable.

Is that the reason why I can't charge via the cable I'm using now? Does USB charging require one of those USB cables w/ those cylindrical "blocks" on both ends?

I've tried charging this phone on 3 different computers already.

I don't believe so. Those blocks are to avoid interference I believe...

Are you sure that the cord you have is for USB charging?

I honestly don't know what you mean by cylindrical blocks. But is the phone capable of charge through USB? I know some phones only use USB for transfering data, and charge via a dedicated power port.

Thanks for the clarification all.

My phone (motokrzr k1) is capable of charing via USB.

the cable I normally use it at home (i'm away for the holidays) and I grabbed the cable that came w/ my cell phone and never tested it out until tonight.

I guess the USB cable that came w/ my phone is not for data transfers only and not charging. I never knew that some USB cables could charge while others couldn't.

Yeah, the cylinders are there to filter interference and shouldn't matter for just charging. Did you install the driver on the computer you're trying to use? With my Razr, it won't charge in Windows unless you install the Motorola driver. In linux it will charge without needing a driver.

SAme with my Zen Micro. The drivers have to be installed first before the USB port can charge the player. (mp3 player, but usb charger.. same concept)

Hmm...no I dont have the software with me and unfortunatley it isn't installed on my comp here. That could be it.

Guess I'll just have to go buy a charger when xmas is over.

Hehe, the iPod charges whether or not your computer has drivers, even if it isn't a computer!

<--- Has charged iPod using stupid USB port on front of cable box.

I'm sure it's floating around out there somewhere. You can probably find it with a few minutes of googling.

That has been my experience with my Motorola phone. Charges in Linux, not in Windows(at least without a driver).
