Question about UPS delivery

GoingUp

Lifer
I have a laptop coming to my parents house in milwaukee. I am working in north illinois right now. Can I call UPS and have them deliver it to me here in Illinois w/o getting charged? I had it shipped to my parents house because the tax is lower there. If it gets delivered here, will I have to pay the extra tax?

why don't you call them and ask?

and technically you have to pay the tax regardless. sales tax evasion is still tax evasion

but will I be paying wisconsin state tax or illinois state tax...

my billing address is in wisconsin

It all depends on your billing address. I would think you should have specified a different shipping address at the time you ordered it.

you're legally obliged to pay the sales tax in the state where it will be used.

I've been in a similar situation with with a PDA. First, UPS are very tough about this because they signed some contract with Dell (bought a Dell Axim). I called and bugged them at the 800 number and at the local depot here. Wouldn't budge unless I got Dell to send in a rerouting form. So I guess the best bet is to try the vendor you ordered from. I'm thinking they won't charge you sales tax since it's merely a rerouting procedure. I may be wrong.
