Upgrading an old 266 on an LX motherboard to a 550 on a BX motherboard. I'll also be upgrading the hard drive to a Maxtor 30g, and the video to a Voodoo 3.

My question is- can I leave all of the old info on my old drive and make it a slave? Even though it has Windows 98 on it. (The new drive will have Windows 98se.) There's too much information on the old drive to try to manually save individual files and copy them to the new drive.

Or can I copy the drive with something like ghost. And hope that when I boot up Windows will make the appropriate changes to the new hardware.

Any help is appreciated.

I highly doubt making a ghost image would work. I don't think it would recognize it all. You would need a clean install (though I may not be correct).

I think I did what you want to do though. Just install win98se on your new hd without the old one in and when installed, put the old hd in as slave and it should work. I can't remember if this worked but I am sure I tried this before.

You can definitely make it a slave, and I think it will work just ghosting everything over as long as you go into safe mode and remove everything from device manager first.

usually hds have software that will copy your old drive onto your new one. maxtor has that maxblast software, i think. my maxtor wasn't detected by maxblast :) or you can just run as slave of course.
