question about upgrading to windows 7

hi i don't know if this has been posted but if i buy an upgrade version of windows 7, will upgrading to windows 7 require an existing instal (which requires me to do the double install like in vistal or is all i need a previous version windows disc ( like the xp upgrade method)? i have also seen other sources that the existing install also has to be activated so the double install doesn't work. has anything been confirmed yet?
