When these were announced, the developers (amazingly) claimed that the hardware would be realeased in *early* 2004.

How much longer do I have to wait? I'm sick of wasting DVD5 discs on my backups, knowing that I'll have to re-archive all of my movies soon with DVD9 discs.

I have heard conflicting reports. the manufacturers tell me even though samples will be ready this year it wont really be cost effective. I have no doubt the MPAA will put up a bit of a political struggle too.

I'd imagine so, but I was just told that some of the newests drives currently being sold will be firmware upgradable to dual-layer burners. I would think that it is because they are ready and yet rather than fight, they will sell them first as single layer drives (which no one could object to). Then, later they will "flip the switch" and there will already be an established market. The economic factor will probably be media costs, which will actually discourage movie piracy and rampant copying . In fact, it could very well be used to show the MPAA that it will not significantly affect DVD movie piracy statistics. I, for one, will be using it almost exclusively for file backup... My brother, accidentally posting as me, made the comment about archiving all of our movies... Which is about three

Matrix, Abyss and Postman after a few more were lost permanantly at a friend's place (which is a good argument for legal backups).

Despite my brother's post, we're definately not big movie-collecting guys, so don't add us to that statistic if you are watching (Directed to the media companies looking for actual market reactions to fight dual-layered drives with).*

Our $25 progressive scan DVD player is primarily for rented movies (One every two months or so) and our HD Sony KV-30XBR910 is for HD XBOX and progressive-scan Gamecube titles ;)

*Looks over shoulder... Thinks "I want my dual layered burner NOW!"

Sony announced a dual layer drive in Europe to be available in April for 200 Euros (~$250). Haven't seen any domestic announcements.

It will be out before too long I bet but the problem will be the media (remember how long 1x DVDr media was at 10 bucks per disc).. I dont think it will be very cost effective till around christmas time.
