I'd imagine so, but I was just told that some of the newests drives currently being sold will be firmware upgradable to dual-layer burners. I would think that it is because they are ready and yet rather than fight, they will sell them first as single layer drives (which no one could object to). Then, later they will "flip the switch" and there will already be an established market. The economic factor will probably be media costs, which will actually discourage movie piracy and rampant copying . In fact, it could very well be used to show the MPAA that it will not significantly affect DVD movie piracy statistics. I, for one, will be using it almost exclusively for file backup... My brother, accidentally posting as me, made the comment about archiving all of our movies... Which is about three
Matrix, Abyss and Postman after a few more were lost permanantly at a friend's place (which is a good argument
for legal backups).
Despite my brother's post, we're definately not big movie-collecting guys, so don't add us to that statistic if you are watching (Directed to the media companies looking for actual market reactions to fight dual-layered drives with).*
Our
$25 progressive scan DVD player is primarily for rented movies (One every two months or so) and our HD Sony KV-30XBR910 is for HD XBOX and progressive-scan Gamecube titles
*Looks over shoulder... Thinks "I want my dual layered burner NOW!"
