Question about unlocking extra pipes on Geforce 6800

I got my leadtek GF6800 installed and running. ATM I get 17,831 in 3dmark 01.
Anway, my question is this.

If I unlock the other 4 pipes and experience artifacting, can I disable them and the card still be in good gaming order with 12? Bascially, if I unlock the other 4 and they dont work, is my card screwed?

Also, How do I do it? In riva tuner it doesn't let me choose a number of pipes I want to use.

I don't think it will be, because I unlocked mine on my BFG 6800 OC, got artifacts, and disabled them and now everything seems fine. Hopefully someone who knows better will speak up too, but do a search on this subject too, because there are a bunch of threads on this subject. Edit--those threads have instructions on how to use Riva Tuner, too, I believe.
