question about umbrella for patio table...

i'm looking at an umbrella ( http://www.amazon.com/Ace-Evert-Umbrella-8011S-Polyester/dp/B0012NVHVU/ref=cm_cd_al_qh_dp_i?&th=1 ) and it's going to go in a patio table. i am not sure if i need a heavy duty base to keep it up since it will also have the support of the table to keep it vertical.

i was looking at this base here from ikea - http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/90115073/#/70116889

it's pretty low profile which is good for under a table, and it is 60lbs which seems okay.

the other umbrella we have on our patio is an 11' cantilever one, but the base is over 200lbs for that and it is solid. but as mentioned, it isn't through a table or anything, and this one will be through a table. and i plan on closing this umbrella when not in use.

would a 60lb base probably be good enough?

Hello purbeast, fancy meeting you here. Anyway I am also looking for a patio umbrella so I'm going to follow this thread.

What table do you have?

I plan to get this for the 4th:

i imagine a 60lb base (empty plastic filled with one sandbag) would be sufficient. The table supports most of the wright anyway. Bases keep the umbrella in position

200lb base sounds excessive!

Elmo that looks like a nice table 🙂

I agree, the 200lb weight was for his free standing umbrella though - 60lb sounds sufficient given how heavy the table is.

The table I showed is made by amish people over here in ohio. It's only $300. It's amazing what they can make for cheap. It'll do for July 4th! Such a range of pricing for outdoor furniture. If it lasts me 2 years it'd be worth it. Just needs a stain/clear coat probably.

I'm picturing the table as a pivot point and the 60lb weight on one end of a lever. The question is if wind, etc. during a storm will generate over 60 pounds and move the base. Keeping in mind the distance of that force (i.e. only 30 pounds if applied at 2x the distance).

Gut feel is that for daily use 60lbs is plenty. But I'd be sure to have it... not sure what you call it - folded down, made vertical, put away, whatever when you're done with it. It wouldn't really take too big of a storm to pull it up or start moving it and the table both around.

this is the dining set.

and yeah, the 200lb base is for a standalone, and also cantilever, so the base is offset. i leave the umbrella open pretty much all the time too.

it's for this umbrella here:

and in this pic, you can see how the pole is offset, and the base sits basically under the love seat.

as for the umbrella for the table, it will be closed when we're not using it.

Purbeast, can you senda link to the cantilever 200lb umbrella you have? I am also in need of the same 2 umbrella types you have (one for a dining table, and a standalone). Looking to get it before Saturday so I'll have to choose quickly!

Thanks,
ELmo

the umbrella isn't 200lbs, the base for it is (after adding 4 bags of sand to it).

umbrella was only $180 when i got it in the spring.

if the table isn't very heavy I'd go with a heavier base rather than light, because if there's wind it's really uncomfortable eating while holding the table still.

But it's usually cheap white plastic tables and plastic base filled with sand things that behave like that.

I bought a patio table umbrella which uses a 50lb weight, and I'm going to buy a 13' cantilever umbrella tomorrow which uses 400lb of sand.

your backyard is looking very nice! I see a re-roofing project in your future 😉

thanks. we tried to get as much of it finished as we could before our son was born this past march so we could enjoy it with him and we wouldn't have as much money to do stuff back there.

and yeah i forget how old the roof was when we purchased the house in 2012, but i believe the inspector said the roof was going to need to be done within 5-10 years of purchasing the house.

I have installed my Cantilever umbrella (250-300lb base) and the patio table umbrella (yellow, 50lb base).
