My mobo only supports DDR. If I get some DDR2 ram and install it, will my machine still work, albeit at a reduced speed or would it completely diasable my computer? The reason I ask is for budgetary reasons. If I can get some ram today but upgrade my mobo/cpu later it would be better finacially. Thanks.

No, you wouldn't even be able to install ( physically ) the DIMM.
The slots aren't the same ( the 'notch' is positioned differently ).

A DDR-1 only mobo accepts only DDR-1 memories.
DDR-2 only mobo >> only DDR-2 memories...
etc etc
