I'm ordering a 1tb 970 evo, and I would like to keep my current 256gb 960 evo. Will probably just clone the data from the 960 onto the 970 as I want to use the 970 as a dual boot.

My motherboard says the following

  1. 1 x M.2 connector (Socket 3, M key, type 2242/2260/2280/22110 PCIe x4/x2 SSD support) (M2Q_32G)
  2. 1 x M.2 connector (Socket 3, M key, type 2242/2260/2280 SATA and PCIe x4/x2 SSD support) (M2A_32G)
Does that mean I can install both at full speed? What does the "type" mean?

Type also refers to size. Would probably need to read rest of the manual to see if using certain inputs causes a drop in pci bandwidth.

Type is the length of the drive. Both should work at full speed. Depending on how your Motherboard allocates resources, the Drives may have to share bandwidth with a PCI-e slot. On AM4 Motherboards the 2nd M.2 connector shares bandwidth with PCI-e 1, while the 1st connector has its' own(non-shred) PCI-e lanes to the CPU. I suspect your situation maybe similar.

That said, I don't think that kind of sharing would cause any performance issues. Maybe if you were using the SSD and Video Card really heavily at the same time there might be an impact, maybe.

Ok thanks. That shared bandwidth would only be an issue if I am using both drives at once?

No, sharing would be, if any, with a PCI-e slot. Potentially the Video Card could be sharing PCI-e bandwidth with one of the M2 drives.
