Question about two HDs on same IDE cable

I want to connect two Seagate Barracuda 160.0 GB @ 7200 RPMS's together on one IDE cable. I still need to connect my DVD player and I cant connect my HD to the DVD player because the cable doesnt reach. If I use the second HD just for backup and storage (wont load any games, or apps on it) will I see a decreased performance of the first drive? Or does it only degrade performace when both drives are being accessed? How much data needs to be passing through both drives before they start conflicting with each other and a noticeable speed difference is presented?

Thanks!

I believe the master drive, that which is connected to the long end of the cable experiences no performance decrease while the slave drive, the one connected to the shorter mid section of the cable experiences 1/2 performance. I take it you have 2 ide ports? If both hdd's are running at high loads, which would most likely be rare, then the slave drive would probably be comprimised once again, to like 1/4 performance.

I've run 2 drives before on the same cable (80 wire ATA133 of course) and didn't really see much in the way of performance decrease. The master performed the same. If the slave drive does run at a lower performance than the master it can't be 1/2, that is extreme and it never did for me. I think someone is exaggerating a little 😉

However even if the slave drive did decrease to 1/2 performance in your case it wouldn't matter a whole lot since it is just storage anyway.

There's probably minimal performance hit like SparkyJJO has suggested. But an extra long IDE cable isn't that expensive, if you're concerned about performance, I'd go out and get a long cable for a few bucks?
